Why gamertags here are 12 characters or less
Xbox gamertags used to be capped at 12 characters. Since the July 2026 console update, a gamertag can be up to 15 characters, but only if nobody else has it. When the name is already in use, Xbox adds a number suffix (Nightowl#4821) and the name itself must stay within 12 characters. Non-Latin gamertags are also limited to 12.
So this gamertag generator aims for 12 or less. A name that length works on Xbox either way, fits Minecraft's 16-character limit, and doesn't get cut off in lobby lists and kill feeds.
Where your gamertag is checked
Xbox only lets you check a gamertag when you're signed in to a Microsoft account, so we can't check Xbox, and the same is true for PlayStation and Epic. Instead, each idea is checked live on gaming platforms that do answer:
| Platform | What we check | Name rules |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | Custom profile URL | Display names aren't unique; the custom URL is |
| Minecraft (Java) | Profile name, via Mojang | 3–16 characters, letters, numbers, underscore |
| Roblox | Username, including the name filter | 3–20 characters, one underscore |
| Kick | Channel name | Matters if you plan to stream |
To try a name on Xbox, press Open Xbox, sign in and go to the gamertag change page. Xbox shows whether the name is free and what suffix it would get. Your first gamertag change is free; later changes cost money.
What makes a strong gaming name
- It works in voice chat. Teammates will shout it. Brickfall is callable; xXdrk_5hdwXx is not.
- One idea, two parts. Pair an object with an action or a mood: IronDrift, QuietFang, LuckyAnvil.
- Capitals instead of separators. Xbox doesn't allow underscores or dots, so FrostByte travels better than frost_byte.
- No leetspeak for the sake of it. Swapping letters for digits (Sh4d0w) makes a name hard to find and still often taken.
- Nothing personal. Lobbies are full of strangers. Keep your real surname, age, school and hometown out of your gamertag.
Minecraft Java and Bedrock use different names
This trips up a lot of players. On Minecraft Java Edition your name is a Minecraft profile name, and that's what our Mojang check covers. It can be changed once every 30 days. On Bedrock Edition (consoles, phones, Windows) your name is your Xbox gamertag, so the Xbox rules above apply and our Java check doesn't tell you anything about it.
If you want one name across both, pick something that fits both sets of rules: no underscore, 12 characters or less. For Roblox-only names with softer styles, see Roblox usernames. For a streaming channel, the YouTube channel names page checks @handles. To test a name you already have, use the username checker.
Questions
Can you check if an Xbox gamertag is taken?
No. Xbox requires a signed-in Microsoft account to check. We check Steam, Minecraft, Roblox and Kick, and link you to Xbox for the final answer.
What are the numbers after some gamertags?
A suffix. If you pick a gamertag someone already has, Xbox lets you use it with a number added after a #, so every full gamertag stays unique.
Can my gamertag be longer than 12 characters?
Yes, up to 15 since July 2026, but only if the name is unique. A name that needs a suffix stays at 12.
Can I use an underscore in a gamertag?
Not on Xbox, which allows letters, numbers and spaces. Minecraft and Roblox do allow underscores.
Does "Available" here mean I can have it on Xbox?
No. It means the name was free on the platform shown in that row, at that moment.
