Instagram username rules
Instagram usernames are more flexible than most, which is why so many good ones are separated only by a dot or an underscore. Our Instagram username generator sticks to these rules so every idea can actually be entered.
Usernames are not case-sensitive and are shown in lowercase. Spaces, dashes, emoji and fancy fonts are not allowed in the username. Those belong in the Name field, which is separate, doesn't have to be unique and is also searchable.
Why we don't check Instagram
Instagram doesn't let outside tools look up usernames. From our server, the first request gets a "please wait a few minutes" error, and a logged-out visitor can't reliably tell a free name from a private or restricted one. Any site showing a green "available on Instagram" is guessing.
So on this page we generate handles that fit Instagram's rules, then check them on TikTok, YouTube, Telegram and the other platforms that do answer. When a name is free on those, press Open Instagram, go to Edit profile, and type it into the username field. Instagram tells you straight away if it's taken.

For a brand, match the handle to the name people will type, and drop the dots if you'll often say it out loud. "Tom draws, no dot" is easy; "tom underscore draws underscore" isn't.
Changing your Instagram username
Open your profile, tap Edit profile and change the Username field. Your old link stops working and your old username can be claimed by someone else. Instagram says it may let you switch back within 14 days if nobody has taken the name in between, but don't count on it.
Before switching, update the handle wherever you've shared it: link in bio tools, other profiles and printed cards. If you'll run the same name on other apps, check it first in the username checker so you don't end up with different handles on every site.
Safety tip for younger users: a public username can be found by anyone. Leave out your surname, age and school, and use a private account if you only want friends to see your posts.

Can I use capital letters in an Instagram username?
You can type them, but Instagram shows usernames in lowercase and treats LunaArt and lunaart as the same.
Why does a name show "not available" when no profile exists?
The account may be private, deactivated, restricted or recently renamed. Instagram doesn't release those names publicly, so the profile page can look empty while the name is still in use.
How many times can I change the name on my profile?
The Name field (not the username) can be changed twice within 14 days.
Should I use a dot or an underscore?
Either works. Dots look cleaner in lowercase; underscores are easier to read aloud. Pick one and use the same style on every app.
