Your TikTok username is the @ in your profile link and in every mention. Every idea from our TikTok username generator is built to fit these limits:

The name next to your picture is different: TikTok calls it your nickname. It can be up to 30 characters, may include spaces and emoji, and doesn't have to be unique. If you want a stylised look, put it in the nickname and keep the username plain, so people can actually type it.

How the TikTok check works

For each idea we load the public TikTok profile address for that name. If TikTok shows a profile, the name is taken. If it shows no account, we mark it Available.

TikTok doesn't offer an official way to do this, and it sometimes answers with a challenge page instead of a profile. When that happens you'll see Unknown. Unknown only means TikTok didn't give us a clear answer; it does not mean free. Press Open TikTok and try the name in Edit profile to be sure.

A free result also can't tell you whether TikTok will accept the name. Names that impersonate a brand or a creator, or break the Community Guidelines, can be refused or later reset.

Choosing a TikTok username that fits your videos

Because you can change it only once every 30 days, pick for the content you plan to post, not only today's trend.

• Say what you make. A food account called mia.bakes is found by people who search "bakes"; mia_xo22 isn't.
• Make it easy to say. Creators say their handle at the end of videos. If you have to spell it out, it's too complicated.
• Leave room to grow. sam.plays.minecraft gets awkward when you move to another game. samplays doesn't.
• Watch the dots. mia.bakes, miabakes and mia_bakes are three different accounts. Pick the one you'll remember and consider which variants a copycat could grab.
• Keep it anonymous if you're young. Don't use your surname, age, school or city. Plenty of big accounts use a first name and a topic, nothing more.

How to change your TikTok username

1. Go to your profile and tap Edit profile.
2. Tap Username, type the new one and save. TikTok shows whether it's available as you type.
3. Update your link anywhere you shared it. The old profile address stops pointing to you, and someone else may claim the old name.
