Channel name and @handle are two different things
This YouTube name generator gives you two things for each idea, because YouTube asks for two:
- Channel name — the title shown on your channel page and under your videos. It can contain spaces and doesn't have to be unique. Moss & Maple Cooking is fine even if another channel uses it.
- Handle — the unique @ name, such as @mossandmaple. It forms your channel link (youtube.com/@…) and is used in mentions and comments.
The channel name is where you can be creative. The handle has to be free, so that's the part we check live on YouTube.
YouTube handle rules
Handles also can't look like a web address or a phone number, and must follow YouTube's Community Guidelines, or YouTube can revoke the handle and give your channel a generated one. Handles in some non-Latin scripts have different length limits.
When you change your handle, YouTube holds the previous one for 14 days in case you switch back, and both links work during that time. After that, anyone can claim it.
How to name a YouTube channel
A good channel name tells a new viewer what they'll get before they click. Some patterns that work:

Say the name out loud. If a viewer hears it once and can find you by typing what they heard, it works. Avoid numbers that sound like words and double letters that blur, like @sammmakes.
If you're a young creator, leave your surname, school and hometown out of both the name and the handle. You can use your real first name in the channel name and something more private in the handle.
Setting or changing your handle
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Customization, then Profile.
- Edit the handle. YouTube shows whether it's available as you type. Publish to save.
Our live check uses the same public handle address, so if we say a handle is free, YouTube had no channel under it when we asked. Unknown means YouTube didn't answer, not that the handle is free. Nothing is reserved, so claim a good handle soon.
Most creators also post clips on TikTok and Instagram. Check the same handle there with the username checker, or get short-video ideas on the TikTok usernames page. For gaming channels, the gamertag generator has shorter, punchier names.
Questions
Can two channels have the same name?
Yes. Channel names aren't unique. Handles are, which is why only the handle is checked.
How long can a YouTube handle be?
3 to 30 characters in Latin letters and numbers, with underscores, hyphens and dots allowed in the middle.
How often can I change my handle?
Twice within a 14-day period. Your old handle is held for 14 days in case you change your mind.
Why is a handle taken when the channel looks empty?
Any channel can hold a handle, including ones with no videos. If YouTube shows a channel at that @ address, the handle is taken.
Should my handle match my channel name?
As closely as possible. If the exact match is gone, add a short word like "tv", "hq" or "official" rather than random numbers.
